This is adventure. This is uncertainty. This is trial and error. This is All In.

Welcome!  On "A Salad-Bar Farm Life" I hope to keep you all updated with progress and happenings on our brand new farm! I'll post updates, recipes, things we're learning, contests, and info for a healthy lifestyle! Each post will be linked to Facebook, so like our page (Salad Bar Farm) to make sure you never miss a post!

Now, I'd like to introduce us. We're the Hales, and here's our story....

We have such similar stories, it's hard to believe that we grew up over 800 miles apart (NC and MS)! We both grew up with a love of animals, healthy living, and being outdoors. I come from a long line of farmers of the past, and I suppose it's in my blood!

Farming as an occupation was a common dream between us, though we never thought it was viable as a livelihood in today's world. Over the years and through various ways we each learned of Polyface Farm and became inspired and hopeful. We learned that there is a NEED for people like us, who have a passion for feeding people GOOD and NUTRITIOUS foods! Joel Salatin's book You Can Farm helped us to realize that our dream could be a reality. Similar interests and a passion for farming led to our meeting at Polyface!

After attending a 2010 "Polyface Intensive Discovery Seminar", Jonathan applied for and was accepted as a 2012 summer Intern at Polyface. Following an awesome summer, he was accepted as a year-long Apprentice.

Meanwhile, I had been learning more about the famous farm and moved to Polyface in 2013 as a member of that year's summer intern team! I also subsequently became an Apprentice through the 2014 season, while Jonathan stayed at Polyface as a farm manager and general shop manager / metal fabricator / mechanic.

In 2015 we celebrated a day like none other! We joined hands in life and made promises to pursue our calling TOGETHER as husband and wife. We then had the privilege of working together at Polyface managing several rental properties, raising pastured broilers, hogs, cattle, and turkeys, as well as Jonathan continuing his work in the Polyface "Shop".

In January 2017 we moved back Mississippi with hopes, plans, and dreams, and a baby on the way! In April we welcomed our precious baby into the world after a wonderful natural birth.

This year, 2018, we're finally gearing up to really get our farm off the ground... Or in the ground, if you will. :)

Now, we're getting ready to move again. This time we'll be moving to a suburban area of Pike County, where we'll be able to further our call to farming.

We've been planning, purchasing, and prepping in order to start offering products by March of this year!

Stay tuned for more fresh news as Spring approaches!

Hannah
