What's in a Name?

Why did we choose Salad Bar Farm?

Every name has a meaning. Throughout history, parents have considered the meanings of names when naming their children. When it comes to a business or farm name, that name is your first introduction and impression.
Jonathan and I put lots of thought into how our farm should introduce itself. We considered things like "Fresh Farm", "Clean Acres Farm", "Pezi Farm" (Pezi is a Sioux word for grass), and even some strange combination of our names. Nothing fit. None of those names carried the meaning we wanted.

SBF stands not only for "Salad Bar Farm", but also "Simply the Best Foods". It's a promise. We find joy in doing a job well, and promise to do it to the best of our ability and then do it better next time!

Salad Bar Farm means furthering a passion for quality. It means a personal touch. Just as with a restaurant salad bar, there is connection with your food. As specialty growers we believe that education of ourselves and our customers and a personal connection between the two is vital. We want you to have a connection with what you're eating and how it's grown.

SBF will provide sustainably produced foods that are truly fresh. We'll raise the tastiest and most tender fruits, veggies, and meats that we possibly can! Our fruits and veggies are specially selected and grown using organic practices to offer you a fresh salad bar weekly. Our animals are raised on fresh salad bar (pasture) - never a confinement house!

Last but not least, Joel Salatin coined the phrase "Salad Bar Beef". this "Salad Bar" concept Joel talks about means allowing animals to graze selectively on fresh pasture daily and choose the best ingredients to suit their nutrient needs. Joel is the person who confirmed to us that we CAN farm, in his book You Can Farm. Jonathan and I met and began our relationship at, learned sustainable practices from, and first farmed together for Polyface Farm. We thought it only fitting that a part of Polyface Farm should live forever in our own farm's name. Thus: Salad Bar Farm.

- Live Well,
Hannah
