Making Progress

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday!!!

Spring never comes fast enough for me, and yet in these last days of winter there is so much needing to be done! I'll admit that our progress on the farm is slow. With several other projects in the works right now, the farm has gotten unavoidably pushed to a back burner. But that back burner is still on!

We've gotten a preliminary tilling done on two of our garden spots. Both spots needed to be cleaned out after last fall's garden. Our Racken house ("rabbit" + "chicken") needed to be refreshed, so all of those composted materials were spread inside our hoop house to increase the organic matter in the soil. It was enough material to cover the entire house lightly.

Our main outdoor plot needed to be cleaned, enlarged, and tilled. This included digging up/pulling out a tree!

After tilling, we covered the entire plot with a large plastic tarp to help smother out weeds as well as keep the bed dry enough to work until we're ready to plant.

Our tomato and pepper seeds have been planted! I cannot wait until they're old enough to plant! This year we selected special varieties that will give you a beautiful salad (or even snack!) any time you have them. I'm so excited to watch them grow.

Our third largest plot doesn't exist yet. This new plot is currently yard, but we have dreams and plans of turning it into extra growing space!

While our bunnies are growing like wildfires, our laying hen chicks are three weeks behind schedule! While we ordered them to arrive in January, their actual delivery is out of our hands. Hatching has gone poorly at the hatchery and has set back our large order by three whole weeks. They're finally in the brooder and growing with every peep! :)

 It's all coming together!

-Live well,
Hannah
